The Great Barrier Reef
Townsville,Quensland and off the coast
March 1992

At the ferry terminal that will take us to the The Great Barrier Reef. It is the largest deposit of coral in the world, the reef extends about 2010 km (1250 mi).

here comes our ride . . .

on a glass-bottomed boat

the view from the boat, the corals are just a few feet below and are exposed during low tide

getting ready for a closer look at the reefs

snorkelling here is a must (for swimmers that is)

having lunch at our ship while anchored neer the reefs (a study later found out that all these anchoring contributed to damaging the reefs)
