Solar Challenge
Darwin NT
November 1990

They come in all shapes and sizes. The only restriction is that the car should fit inside a box of certain dimensions.

All cars start at 8:00 am and stops at 5:00pm each day and continue the next day from the point where they stopped.

The winning car will cross the finish line four or five days later. The big American and Japanese car companies have been dominating the races. Top speeds of the fastest ones reach up to 55mph.

To have any reasonable chance of winning, entries use the most advanced solar cells straight from laboratories. Universities from Australia, Europe, and the US have been sending their experimental technology.

The drivers are almost always in horizontal positions to minimize wind drags. The solar cars are followed by a support crew for driver substitutions and on the spot car repairs.
